1. What do you want to do?

Uig Community Trust would like to explore community owned solar, wind and hydro power generation projects in locations that the Trust owns, like the Filling Station or influences, like the Community Hall or in other locations that the Trust could acquire through Community Right To Buy.  We'll need funding for:-

a. Energy usage audits for properties that the Trust owns, like the Filling Station.

b. Feasibility work on sites owned by potential partners

c. Installation of systems in locations where projects are feasible.

2. Why is your project important for the community?

Uig is a coastal community with two rivers that run into Uig Bay.  The community has an abundance of south facing land and onshore wind throughout the year.  At the same time, Uig is regularly exposed to power outages due to bad weather.  Our development planning uncovered a strong interest in developing community owned green energy generation, which can reduce our reliance on energy from the national grid, reduce our exposure to power from costly fossil fuels and also provide a source of revenue for the Trust.

3. What positive impact will your project have?

The project will:-

a. Provide a source of revenue from green energy for the Uig Community Trust.

b. Reduce the exposure of the community to the rising cost of fossil fuel usage.

c. Provide locally sourced energy to increase the continuity of supply when power outages occur due to bad weather.

d. Provide green power to local businesses with predictable energy usage.

4. What key milestones have you achieved so far and what will your next steps be?

The Uig Community Trust has had initial discussions with Local Energy Scotland on how best to approach community owned energy generation projects.  Our initial focus will be on the energy generation potential around properties that the Trust owns, like the Filling Station, but we're keen to include the wider local community in the feasibilty phase to ensure that the whole community benefits from the upsides of community owned green energy.

Our next step is to work with Business Energy Scotland on an energy audit for the Filling Station, but we also want to explore the feasibilty of other sources of green energy available to the community.

5. What is your anticipated start date/end date.

We'll engage with Business Energy Scotland on the audit phase of the Filling Station work during Q2 2026.  We hope to begin feasibility work on other potential projects around the community during the second half of 2026.
