Proposal code: THC-2026-04-105

Improvements to the public realm from Gynack Gardens to Ardvonie Park

Estimated Price

£100,000

Kingussie's 2025 Community Action Plan includes lots of great suggestions for the town’s public spaces as well as several requests for tourist / leisure improvements to create “reasons for visitors to stop”. Kingussie Community Development Company (KCDC) along with local partners including the Community Council are looking at grouping some of these suggestions into an improvement plan for the public space extending from Ardvonie Park through to Gynack Gardens, with the work delivered in phases aligned with approvals and funding availability. The aim here would be to deliver work that…

  • Continues the improvements from the Spey Street Junction project
  • Enhances the look of the main thoroughfare
  • Provides a better (and safer) pedestrian link from Ardvonie Park to Gynack Gardens
  • Improves facilities for locals and visitors alike

Specific suggestions include the creation of year-round structural planting, wildlife areas, an outdoor gym, covered seating areas, e-bike charging hub, landscaping around picnic benches, a new footpath linking the car park and main street, bus stop improvements and new consistent signage and street furniture.  These suggestions have developed directly from ideas raised in the Community Action Plan and are therefore an expression of their importance for the community itself and in terms of making the town a more attractive place for visitors. Some of the suggestions are relatively straightforward and could be delivered (once approved) via KCDC volunteers and others will require more collaborative effort and input from contractors to deliver.

We would expect these enhancements to add to the attractiveness of the town, add to Kingussie's "cycle friendly" status and to the creation of a network of e-bike charging facilities and specifically to result in locals and visitors using these spaces in greater numbers.

KCDC has very recently carried out a follow-up survey amongst the town to ascertain where public priorities lie and whether any other suggestions may come forward.  The results of this survey are due to be presented at the April KCDC Board meeting. Following this the next step for KCDC is to engage with the Highland Council and Community Council over detailed proposals for the area and the creation of an indicative timeline for delivery.  At this point the scope and timescale is undefined but we would expect work to start (subject to approvals) for the more straightforward elements of this phased plan within this year.  No quotes have been obtained currently and the £ figure below is a budget estimate for all elements of the project.
