Proposal code: THC-2026-05-120

Resurfacing Newtonmore’s tennis courts for the first time in almost 30 years will eliminate the current bad bounces and vastly improve the experience for members, visiting clubs and other visitors.

Estimated Cost

£60,000

1] this is s total resurface: first holes need to be drilled to the orginal foundation and filled with shingle; the tennis posts need adjusted to the slightly higher level the surface wil be at; the whole surface area needs tarred; the edge of the tar needs to be aligned with the kerb; two coats of acrylic paint need applied; and fianlly the line markings.

2] The land where the tennis courts are located is a community asset owned by village trustees [as is the adjacent Bowling Club and shared clubhouse]. The tennis club has 65 years left on the lease from the village trustees.. Community empowerment is the key connection Partnership Plan in lieu of the Area Place Plan. The rejuvenation of the tennis courts protects this asset for the community in thne long term. In the short to medium term it supports the economy as our partner hotels and guest houses will be able to offer a better quality of experience to visitors. This also links to travel as because of the state of the courts we know some locals are currently travelling to Aviemore to play by car. This project should consequently reduce car journeys

3] We will have a happy membership who are finding at the moment that even social tennis is spoiled by poor bounces. We currently have a ladies and a mixed doubles team ... feedback from other visiting clubs is that we need to do something to improve our courts. We find that visitors are trying the courts out, but not coming back throughout their stay so we expect thie will change. We will be able to maesure this through the smart gate booking system.

4]November 2025 was when the first quote was received

December 2025 was when the AGM approved proceeding with the scheme. By this time we had formally approved our reserves policy so were able to take a decision on the minmum contribution that the club itself could make.

Letters of support have been sought and receieved in the April/may period with some good success

Due to the consequences of the American/Israeli attack on Iran we are currently [May 2026] getting updated quotes due to the steep rise in oil related products including the tar we need

The first deadline is submitting the first two key funding applications by mid June 2026 to the Community Resilience Fund and Awards for All

The next step is applying by end July to two further smaller funds that have funds restricted for use in Newtonmore with a very high chance of success.and to another national fund that has encouraged us to apply.

Once 50% funding is secured we have a further supportive Highland fund to apply to therafter

5] The latest start date is 1st August 2027 as this will give certainty that the night time temperatures are above 10c when the two acrylic coats are applied. The earliest we could start would be mid May 2027 for the same reason. The latest end date would be mid September 2027.
