Sutherland in the Northwest Highlands is spectacularly beautiful, but its communities are threatened by fundamental challenges of extreme population sparsity, unaffordable housing, chronic depopulation and food and fuel poverty. Alongside this, our biodiversity is under mounting pressure from a range of significant environmental challenges, compounding the vulnerability of already fragile ecosystems.
Sutherland Community Seaweed CIC has been set up as an outcome of extensive community work, by Assynt Development Trust, Scourie Community Development Company and Kinlochbervie Community Company and community consultation to address these challenges through seaweed farming, creating quality jobs through true sustainable development. We will establish seaweed farming alongside seaweed gathering and primary processing facilities to provide a wide range of quality seaweeds to a wide range of markets, starting at a scale that enables access to existing markets. The world is rapidly turning to seaweed as a source of biomaterial for replacement of fossil fuels, human food and animal feed. Sutherland Community Seaweed will be ready to meet those demands.
Sutherland Community Seaweed CIC will have multiple seaweed farm at sea sites in the NW2045 area.
Sutherland Community Seaweed CIC have the support of the NW2045 and the NW2045 Regional Land Use Partnership. https://www.northwest2045.scot/
It will have on shore sites in Lochinver, Scourie and Kinlochbervie.
KLB and Lochinver will have seaweed processing plants with ancillary offices and marine waste processing plants and Scourie will have a seaweed nursery.
Sutherland Community Seaweed CIC will bring employment and income to the communities of the NW2045.
The Community Interest Company was set up in November 2025.
Next steps for 2026 are:
1. Securing on shore sites in Kinlochbervie, Lochinver and Scourie and starting planning permission processes.
2. Confirming initial seaweed farm sites and starting the social licensing process with Crown Estates and the local communities.
3. Securing Funding for Architect/planning services, our consultants, site leases/rentals and staffing.
Sutherland Community Seaweed CIC environmental and social economic aims are as follows:
1. To provide a sustainable food source for humans, animals and plants: Seaweed is a highly nutritious and sustainable food source that is rich in vitamins, minerals, and protein.
2. To ensure we are environmentally friendly: Seaweed cultivation uses no freshwater, fertiliser, or pesticides.
3. To create jobs: Seaweed farming creates jobs in coastal areas where traditional industries such as fishing and crofting may be declining and offer opportunities to those living locally transitioning from the oil and gas industry.
4. To boost the local economy: Cultivating seaweed can create new business opportunities and stimulate local circular economies.
5. To promote Biodiversity: Seaweed farming can promote biodiversity in coastal areas by providing new habitats for marine organisms.
6. To enhance Water quality: Seaweed can help to improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients and pollutants from the surrounding water.
7. To aid Ecosystem restoration: Seaweed cultivation can be used as a tool for ecosystem restoration by creating new habitats for fish and other marine organisms.
8. To aid Food security: Seaweed cultivation can help to improve food security by providing a locally sourced and sustainable food supply (for humans and animals).
9. To aid Carbon capture: Seaweed can be used to capture and sequester carbon, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
10. To produce Seaweed that can be offered as a biodegradable alternative to traditional plastic.
