Our vision is to build a modern, accessible, and sustainable Passivhaus-certified community hall for Melvich, Portskerra, and the surrounding area.
Melvich Community SCIO(MCS) wants to provide a welcoming meeting place where residents and visitors of all ages can come together, helping to strengthen community connections and encourage interaction between different generations. The facility will support physical and mental well-being through exercise classes, support groups, recreational activities, and social events.
The hall will create opportunities for a wide range of clubs, classes, youth groups, senior activities, and community events, ensuring that people with diverse interests and needs can participate in local activities. It will also provide space for healthcare outreach services, which are particularly important in remote rural communities such as ours. In addition, the building will serve as a valuable community resource during emergencies, including severe weather events and other local incidents.
Community events hosted at the hall will increase visitor numbers and local spending, providing economic benefits for village businesses. By offering activities and services within the parish, the facility will reduce the need for residents to travel elsewhere, improving accessibility and inclusion. This is especially important for younger people, older residents, and those with limited transport options.
We have already undertaken extensive community engagement through a series of community open days, consultations, and regular project updates, ensuring that local residents have had opportunities to shape and support the development of the new village hall.
The initial architectural design stages have been completed using a combination of grant funding and community fundraising. Following a competitive Invitation to Tender (ITT) process for the next phase of architectural services, an architect has now been appointed to take the project forward.
We are currently focused on securing the funding required to progress through the remaining design, planning, and technical stages. These next phases will develop the project to a construction-ready status, with the aim of breaking ground in early 2027.
The strong level of community support, together with the progress already achieved, demonstrates both the viability of the project and the commitment to delivering a modern, accessible, and sustainable community facility for future generations.
The flexible design will allow the hall to adapt to changing community needs over time, ensuring that it remains a valuable asset for current and future generations.
