1. What do we want to do?

We want to bring the Hall up to modern and much higher heating efficiency standards and reduce our carbon footprint.

2. Why is the project important to our community?

Plockton Village Hall is a central hub for the whole local community. It is used by a large range of activities from, Pilates, children's playgroups, both adult and youth drama groups, local flower and baking shows, weddings, funerals, ceilidhs and music shows, dances, education, and senior citizens parties. The local demographic analysis shows that the age group of the local community is elderly and the Village Hall Committee recognise the importance of maintaining its regular use for all users both young and old.

We have looked at the highly inefficient energy usage in the Village Hall and we wish to bring it up to current standards and contribute to the government's aim of Net Zero. We have already approached Business Energy Scotland and they have identified that we should consider replacing the wall mounted radiant heaters. The aim of the project is in two phases, the first to improve the heat retention of the hall and, subsequently, install alternative heating methods. This will improve the comfort and usage of the hall for all members of our community.

3. What positive impact will our project have?

The first part of the project is to improve the heat retention of the hall. Currently many users of the hall during the winter have to wear additional outdoor clothing to retain warmth. Older people, in particular, find the cold difficult and discourages use of the hall by them. By improving the heat retention we believe that the Hall will be more resilient and more welcoming and encourage additional use whilst, at the same time, reducing the overall expenditure and our carbon footprint.

4. What key milestones have we achieved so far? And what will our next steps be?

We have sought and paid for professional advice from both an architect and structural engineers. We are aware of the structural weakness of the Village Hall roof and have made our plans to take that into account. We have produced a detailed specification and this has been sent to both the Highland Council planning department and potential builders. We have received initial quotations and a building warrant has been authorised.

5. What is our anticipated start date?

We envisage a start date within 2 to 3 months depending on the usage of the hall over the summer and with financial support we expect the work to take approximately 3 to 4 weeks.
