Estimated Price
£2,000,000
What we want to do
South Skye Community Campus - creating, enhancing and maintaining sporting, leisure and recreational community facilities for the Skye and Lochalsh community. The short term aims of the Organisation and wider community are to develop and manage new facilities including:
Phase one
• Full-size all-weather pitch including flood lighting
South Skye Community Campus have secured £874,119.22 of funding to deliver phase one. Some additional funds will be required to complete the build due to planning department conditions which have increased costs and other rising costs. The majority of funding to date has come from public bodies and community fundraising.
Phase two
• Changing pavilion and multi-use space including gym
• Bike Pump Track
Phase three
• Upgraded community hall.
• Upgraded playpark.
• Upgraded car park.
It should be noted that these phases may be changed depending on the availability of funding.
SSCC will also take over the management of the community wing in the new Broadford Primary School and MUGA after school hours, weekends and during school holidays.
Why this project is important for our community
South Skye is an area that has had minimal investment in sporting and creative facilities over the years. At the same time there has been significant investment in housing, a new hospital and fish feed plant. Additional infrastructure is essential if we want people to live, work and visit here and this project will address depopulation and support local businesses. We know that sporting facilities are an important and attractive factor to people, especially young people, when deciding where to live.
Broadford is one of the fastest growing villages out with Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, and the creation and maintenance of additional and existing community facilities is essential. It must be noted that there are plans for a “workers camp” in the area, to support energy projects including the upgraded powerline, which will increase the population by at least 100% should proposals be approved. It is essential that if these “camps” go ahead there is suitable infrastructure to support health and wellbeing rather than “tick box” facilities that leave no lasting legacy.
This project is highlighted in the following plans:
· Broadford and Strath Local Place Plan
· Skye and Raasay Future Plan
· Westplan
Positive Impact
With SSCC developing and improving facilities in South Skye including our desperately needed sport facilities, precious village hall and cherished green and amenity spaces surrounding the campus we will clearly achieve a number of outcomes including:
• Improved facilities for smaller communities
• Address population decline
• Improve and promote health, social care and wellbeing
• Increased opportunities to get involved with sporting and creative activities
• Increased opportunities to partake in wet weather activities
• Reduction in travel distance for those in outlying villages
