Eigg Camping Pods Expansion

Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust organisation No comments

Proposal code: THC-2026-04-94

Create affordable visitor accommodation and a managed campsite to increase overnight stays, support island businesses, and strengthen Eigg’s local economy.

Estimated Price

£95,000

1. We are seeking funding to:

  • Build three new self-contained visitor accommodation units adjacent to the three existing camping pods
  • Undertake site preparation and infrastructure works for these units (groundworks, services connections)
  • Develop a formal campsite at the pier (An Laimhrig), including defined pitches and access to existing shower, toilet, and drying facilities
  • Improve site management to support sustainable use of facilities and visitor flow.

2. Eigg has experienced a 45% reduction in visitor beds between 2019 and 2025, significantly impacting the island’s economy. Many local businesses depend on tourism, particularly those operating from the recently expanded An Laimhrig hub.

Visitor data (2023) highlights strong demand:

  • 16% of visitors camp
  • 33% use self-catering accommodation
  • 30% stay in camping pods

Despite this, accommodation availability is now a key barrier, with consistent feedback from visitors and local businesses about the difficulty of securing overnight stays.

This project aligns with the Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust's Strategy (2025–2028), developed with the Isle of Eigg Residents Association, which prioritises:

  • Supporting existing businesses
  • Developing community-led tourism
  • Generating sustainable income for community benefit.

It also supports better land and visitor management by reducing unmanaged wild camping, which can negatively impact wildlife, crofting, and the natural environment.

It links in with the Lochaber Place Plan by aligning with Tourism Management and Economic Development for our local community.

3. The project will:

  • Increase visitor capacity, enabling more people to stay overnight on Eigg
  • Boost income for local businesses, particularly those at An Laimhrig
  • Generate additional community income for reinvestment in local/community priorities
  • Provide affordable accommodation options, including for families
  • Improve the visitor experience with access to facilities close to arrival points
  • Support sustainable tourism by managing camping and reducing environmental impact.

4. Achieved so far:

  • Clear evidence of need through visitor surveys, business feedback, and booking demand
  • Strong community support, reflected in IEHT Strategy priorities
  • Proven model through existing successful pod accommodation
  • Initial site identified next to existing facilities at the pier.

Next steps:

  • Finalise design and layout for pods and campsite
  • Secure contractor quotes.

5. Duration - 9 months. Can start the project as soon as funding secured.
