Uig Community Garden project
Proposal code: THC-2026-04-97
The Uig Community Trust would like to create some community garden spaces in the village to bring people together across generations and to promote social cohesion and mental well being.
Estimated Price
£2,500
1. What do you want to do?
The Uig Community Trust would like to use land around the village, especially in proximity to the Community Hall, to create spaces for a community gardening group. The project will require funding for possible asset transfers of parcels of land, gardening equipment and supplies and some time for project management.
2. Why is your project important for your community?
Uig is a vibrant community, but it lacks cohesion. Young kids in Uig go to four separate primary schools, which means that their parents get pulled into different social groups. In addition the community has a high proportion of residents who did not grow up in the area. Projects that bring people together and promote social cohesion, especially across generations, are important to buidling a thriving culture in the community. Community cohesion was a key theme in our development planning consultation process.
3. What positive impact will your project have?
a. The project will bring people together across generations.
b. The project will turn unused parcels of land into productive and attractive spaces.
c. The project will allow older members of the community with an interest and experience in horticulture to bring their experience to bear to benefit the wider community.
d. The project will allow younger members of the community to develop a hands on understanding of growing and nurturing the land.
e. The project will create a regular focus for bringing the community together around the Community Hall.
f. The project has the potential to plug into programmes that promote mental well being for members of the community in need.
4. What key milestones have you achieved so far and what will your next steps be?
We have identified a number of members of the community that have an interest in leading a gardening group and we have already run a number of environmental improvement initiatives in the community, including beach clean ups and an improvement in the pier area around the war memorial, which incorporated repairs to seating, painting of planters, weeding and planting new flowers and plants.
Our next step is to start the process of asset transfer for appropriate locations around the community to ensure that we have the necessary authority to develop the locations we need. Thereafter we'll seek funding for gardening equipment, materials and some project management time.
5. What is your anticipated start date/end date?
We plan to carry out the asset transfer process for the land in question by the end of Q3 2026. We'll establish the gardening community in parallel. The goal is to have the group up and running by Q3 2026 while there is still some life in the growing season for this year.
There won't be an end date per se. Our hope is that the gardening club will grow and evolve over time.
