1. The Uig Community Trust would like to upgrade the sports pitch and changing facilities in Uig in order to create a multi-sports hub that incorporates the outdoor pitch, improved facilities and the indoor sports hall in the adjacent village hall. This project will require funding to:-
a. Acquire the existing land and changing facilities at the football pitch.
b. Upgrade the pitch itself to improve drainage and make the playing surface suitable for multi-sport usage for more of the year.
c. Upgrade the current changing facilities next to the football pitch to make them larger and more welcoming.
d. Upgrade the indoor sports hall at the Uig Community Hall to make it more suitable for indoor training for teams using the outdoor pitch.
e. Employ a local member of the community to maintain the improved pitch and manage the overall facility.
2. Why is your project important for your community?
Uig has the only football pitch in the north end of Skye and it's adjacent to the village hall, which has an indoor sports hall. The outdoor pitch is used by Skye North West Football Club, but they only play seven or eight homes games per season, so the pitch is under utilised. The presence of the pitch and the adjacent sports hall gives Uig the potential to be a multi-sports hub for the whole of the north end of Skye.
The presence of a multi-sports hub will:-
a. Improve utilisation of the current outdoor pitch and indoor sports hall.
b. Bring sports groups and teams from across the Isle of Skye to Uig on a regular basis, which will bring income into the local community.
c. Promote social cohesion across the north end of Skye, particularly for school age children that attend a number of different primary schools, which was a key theme in our development plan consultation.
d. Increase opportunities for sports participation and training, which was a key theme in our development plan consultation.
3. What positive impact will your project have?
a. It will allow the pitch to be playable 52 weeks of the year, rather than just during the football season.
b. It will allow for increased casual and formal sports participation for kids across the north end of Skye.
c. It will bring more local groups from Skye to Uig on a regular basis, growing Uig's profile as a centre for sport in the north end of the island.
d. It will allow more sports teams on Skye, like Skye Rugby, to have a home base on the island.
e. It will provide a job opportunity for someone local to Uig.
4. What key milestones have you achieved so far and what will your next steps be?
We're in dialogue with Skye North West and Skye Rugby to scope their pitch and training needs as "anchor tenants" for a sports hub. We've met with representatives from the Scottish Rugby Union, who are supportive of the idea of using Uig as a home pitch for Skye Rugby. We've also established that Highland Council is the owner of the outdoor pitch in Uig.
The next steps are to consult with the community on their needs and interests in indoor and outdoor sports in order to pull together a business case for the investment in upgrading the faciltiies. thereafter we'd look at an asset transfer and being the process of sourcing funding. The results of our community consultation will be available in May 2026.
5. What is your anticipated start date/end date.
We'll have the results of our community survey by the end of May 2026, which will allow us to gauge the appetite for increased sports participation in the area. Thereafter we'll begin the process on asset transfer, project planning and funding.
