Proposal code: THC-2026-07-178

To buy the workshop, which is leased, providing a permanent accessible space to grow repair, reuse and community learning activities that reduce waste and support local sustainability.

Estimated Cost

£100,000

We have been providing services to the area since 2019 from our leased workshop in Grantown. Our current Landlord has passed away, and the building will be put up for sale as part of the estate. We wish to purchase the current workshop.

We purchased the shop next door this year for our sales but it is not large enough for us to combine as shop and workshop and we would be unable to continue working if we cannot purchase the workshop.

We are important to the community because we combine environmental, social, educational and economic benefits in one project.

This matters because we reduce waste and landfill, we repair, restore, recycle and resell items that might otherwise be thrown away, helping to reduce waste and encourage reuse. In addition to reusing materials, we have invested in energy efficiency and carbon reduction measures for our buildings, fitting Air Source Heating, insulation and LED lighting in them.

We provide skills and training in partnership with the School, Health Services and other organisations to assist people learn practical, workshop skills, workplace habits and employability skills through training and supported work experience. We support young people, people with additional needs and learning disabilites, those with poor wellbeing or mental ill health and others who may face barriers to emploment, helping them to build confidence, independence, and local support networks, and promote wellbeing and good mental health. We run focussed programmes, including courses linked to wood working designed to support people to rebuild confidence and to manage life's challenges.

We offer a welcoming space to local residents, including older people living alone who can meet others and feel connected to the communiity

We support the local economy and High Street by occupying shop premises, attracting volunteers and customers, and providing affordable furniture ad repair services. We contribute to the vitality of Grantown on Spey's High Street.

We provide services for;

20Trainees at any one time,

8 volunteers,

Repairs for Community Members, 81 since March 26

Sales of refurbished items, 52 this financial year

We currently employ 5 part time staff (2.3 FTE)

We strongly align with the Badenoch and Strathspey Area Place Plan by supporting the key themes of People, Plae and Prosperity. Through repair, reuse, skill development and community engagement we help reduce waste, support climate action, strengthen community resilience, and create local economic and learning opportunities, contributing to a more sustainable, inclusive and thriving Badenoch and Strathspey.

We have a positive learning impact on those in the community in need by providing paractical, hands on opportunities to develop work skills and move closer to the workplace. Through workshops, volunteering, and community activities we help people build confidence, learn new techniques, reduce waste, and increase awareness of environmental issues, while fostering social connections and lifelong learning. We have therefore a positive impact  on the community by promoting sustainability, reducing waste and providing opportunities for people to learn practical repair and upcycling skills. we bring people together, encourage community involvement, support environmental responsibility and help make everyday items more accessible and affordable through our repair, reuse and sharing.
