South Skye Recycling Hub
Proposal code: THC-2026-04-101
Creating and supporting a circular- economy solution to an island wide waste problem.
Estimated Price
£105,200
What do you want to do:
We would like to purchase land to use for a pilot project supporting circular- economy solutions to an islands wide marine litter issue and other recycling and repurposing initiatives. Providing a central point for collection and redistribution saving travel miles and the duplication of efforts. This site will initially be managed by a dedicated Project Officer to support the board and the potential users ensuring best practice and all relevant policies and procedures are adhered to.
Why this project is important for our communities:
In the Broadford and Strath Local Place Plan, registered in October 2024, the need to consider provision for recycling of waste/recycling facilities was highlighted at Parc nan Craobh Industrial Estate, Broadford, Isle of Skye.
In October 2024 Broadford and Strath Community Company expressed an interest in land, owned by HIE, that had just gone on the market for sale. This land is adjacent to a woodland recently purchased by BSCC and currently has planning for 4 commercial units. It should be noted that commercial units have recently been built on adjacent land owned by HIE and the units have taken some time to sell.
BSCC has been approached by Skye Beach Cleans regarding potential space for island(s) wide collection and re-distribution point for suitable marine waste. Skye Beach Cleans highlighted that “many small groups and individuals do this already but we want to facilitate a much more coordinated approach, which maximises the opportunities to do something constructive with as much marine litter as possible”.
It should be noted that in the Scottish Islands Federation briefing paper highlighting island priorities for MSPs and parliamentary candidates’ that marine litter was emphasised as being one of the most visible and persistent pressures on island environments.
In tandem BSCC have been involved with discussions with a number of other groups regarding space for recycling / repurposing initiatives in South Skye. A working group has been formed and includes representatives from Rag Tag and Textile, Skye Climate Action, Broadford & Strath Community Company (BSCC), Skye Beach Cleans, Lochalsh Reuse Recycle Hub and others.
Milestones:
October 2024 – Broadford and Strath local Place Plan registered with need highlighted for provision for recycling of waste/recycling facilities at Parc nan Craobh, Broadford
October 2024 – BSCC registered interest in land at the industrial estate Parc nan Craobh, Broadford
Next steps:
Funding secured for purchase of land at Parc nan Craobh, Broadford and a dedicated Project Officer.
