Proposal code: THC-2026-04-103

Raasay Development Trust's Wood Fuel Project (run entirely by volunteers) processes, dries and delivers locally harvested firewood to help combat fuel poverty on Raasay- we need a replacement vehicle!

Estimated Price

£43,656

This volunteer led initiative takes firewood harvested in Raasay, dries it via excess heat from Raasay Community Renewables river turbines, and delivers to households across Raasay at a more affordable rate than imported wood.  This helps to combat fuel poverty (most homes in Raasay were built pre 1919; a 2017 Communities Housing Trust survey found 44% of households in Raasay are in fuel poverty with the majority relying on oil and solid fuel.  A 2023 survey found 54% of islanders were rationing their heat usage due to cost).  The project provides both a source of affordable fuel to combat this, but also a social outlet for volunteers, similar to a 'Men's Shed'.  PPE and training is provided, along with RDT support.

We are in urgent need of a vehicle to help with deliveries.  We wish to purchase a fully electric Maxus eDeliver3 Cage Tipper Truck (see photo).  We have already applied for and been awarded £19,500 of funding from the Robertson Trust transport fund for this.  We have a quote for a 3 year old vehicle and will purchase as soon as we have all funding in place.  The truck could possibly have other uses by community groups.

Outcomes:

To enhance both volunteer and delivery safety, through replacing the need for a tractor and trailer in the confined space of the 'Pit' operating area, as well as improving difficult maneouvering within tight spaces in Inverarish village and difficult deliveries to outlying areas of Raasay.

To reduce fuel poverty in Raasay through ensuring the continuation of the Wood Fuel Project, which offers wood for islanders at reduced prices.

To reduce our carbon emissions through moving to an electric vehicle and ensuring continuation of on island supply of wood, reducing transport emissions.

This fits with Skye & Raasay Future Place Plan through Climate Action & Resilience; Strengthening Communities; Diverse Economy; Transport Infrastructure.
