Community Centre Upgrade & Modernisation Project

Ormlie Community Centre
Ormlie Community Centre

Proposal code: THC-2026-07-194

We would like to upgrade and modernise our Community Centre to expand our services and quality of support.

Estimated Cost

£60,000

Ormlie Community Association Ltd was established in 1997. We are a community based charity in the heart of the Ormlie Estate in Thurso. We offer Employability, Digital Access, Educational and Socialisation support to people from birth - elderly age. Our Community Centre falls into the top 20% of the most deprived areas in Scotland. We have many issues within our community that we are addressing such as inequalities that are caused by poverty, high levels of unemployment/low paid jobs, poor education, additional needs/disabilities, physical and mental health disabilities, isolation from living in a rural area, alcohol/drug addiction and isolated from family and friends. We are open 6 days a week and run various activities such as Baby & Toddler Groups, Primary Bairns, Teen Scene, 16-30's Social Group, Digital Access (help with CV's, applying for jobs, benefit checks, welfare grants), Elderly Exercises, Over 55's Arts & Crafts and Breakfast/Lunch Hubs which provide a home-cooked meal for members of the community.

We would like to upgrade the community centre as it's beginning to look dated and scruffy. We would like to replace the whole outside of the building with new cladding and new drain pipes. We would like to add solar panels to the roof to reduce energy costs. The front door needs replaced as it currently allows a lot of heat to escape. By improving the appearance of the centre it will make the centre more welcoming, a well maintained building makes people feel comfortable and encourages them to be involved.

We would like to replace existing ladies/gents and disabled toilets inside the centre. All the walls in the centre need painted and filled, the flooring needs replaced throughout the whole building. By improving these areas it will make it a nicer place to support vulnerable individuals.

The Ormlie Community Centre is a safe space for many individuals and families suffering from loneliness, alcohol/substance addictions, domestic violence and mental health concerns. Many people rely on our centre for 1-1 support in their darkest times. All our staff are PVG checked and trained to support disadvantaged members of the public. We are the only community centre in Caithness that caters for all ages and abilities.
