The Nevis Centre Community Hub Transformation is a proposed £5 million capital project to secure the future of one of Lochaber's most important community assets by creating a modern, sustainable and accessible hub for the region.

The project will deliver a coordinated programme of improvements including upgrading the building fabric; improving insulation, glazing and weatherproofing; replacing ageing heating, ventilation and electrical systems; introducing low-carbon and renewable technologies; installing smart energy management systems; improving accessibility throughout the building; refurbishing and reconfiguring community spaces; upgrading digital and event infrastructure; modernising visitor facilities; and creating flexible spaces for community activities, training, leisure, conferences and cultural events.

The Nevis Centre has been at the heart of community life for decades, providing a home for local groups, charities, sports clubs, businesses, families and visitors. It is one of the few venues in Lochaber capable of hosting large scale community events while also providing affordable meeting, activity and leisure space under one roof. However, the ageing building is becoming increasingly expensive to operate, less energy efficient and no longer meets the accessibility and flexibility expected by today's communities. Without significant investment, rising operating costs and deteriorating infrastructure will threaten the Centre's long term sustainability and the services it provides.

The project directly supports the priorities identified within the Lochaber Place Plan by protecting an important community asset, improving access to inclusive community facilities, supporting health and wellbeing, contributing towards Net Zero ambitions, strengthening the local economy and creating a vibrant year-round destination for residents and visitors.

The transformation will deliver lasting social, environmental and economic benefits. Energy efficiency improvements will reduce carbon emissions and significantly lower operating costs, allowing more resources to be reinvested into community programmes and services. Refurbished, accessible and flexible spaces will enable more activities for young people, families, older people and those experiencing disadvantage or isolation. Improved facilities will support volunteering, skills development, employability, community learning and partnership working while increasing participation across all sections of the community.

The upgraded Centre will also strengthen Fort William's role as the regional hub for Lochaber by attracting more conferences, exhibitions, performances and events throughout the year. This will increase visitor numbers, generate additional spending for local businesses, support employment and create opportunities for social enterprise and community organisations.

The project has already established a clear long-term vision and strategic direction. Initial discussions have taken place with stakeholders. The next stage of development will include community engagement and consultation, a full feasibility study and business case, building condition surveys, energy and accessibility assessments, concept design development, cost planning, procurement of technical consultants, statutory approvals and preparation of planning and building warrant applications where required. 

Subject to funding, project development will commence in 2026, with detailed design and statutory approvals completed during 2026-27. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2027, with completion and reopening of the transformed Nevis Centre expected during early 2028.
