Reconstruction of the last sail powered herring lugger Muirneag, benefitting age old skills, apprenticeships, youth development and community enhancement.

Estimated Cost

£1,800,000

The Zulu is the iconic Scottish Fishing craft of her time, coming in at the very end of the sail powered fishing era, before motor vessels changed the design and style of the Scottish fishing fleet. Once numerous in harbours on the shores of the North and Celtic seas, the only surviving example is the hulk of Research reserved undercover at the Scottish Fisheries Museum. Therefore, the construction of a full sized zulu would be a project of global significance,  something which Muirneahg na Mara are working hard to achieve. Principal partners, West Coast Working Boats - a collaboration between Johnson and Lofthus Boatbilders and Isle Ewe boats will build a new Muirneag, her original incarnation the last Zulu to fish under sail from Stornoway Harbour, based on plans taken before her decommissioning in the 1950s. Upon her completion, Muirneag will be at the centre of Muirneag na Maras vision for an ongoing educational and cultural heritage project, linking sail training with the marine environment and the place of herring fishing in world history. Website, social media, video, charity formation, bank account, crowdfunding, financial and inkind support from both Ullapool and Stornoway harbour authorites, project tendered to 3 suitable boatbuilders. Timber sourced boat yard secured, start summer 2027 complete spring 2030.
