Fèis Thròndairnis is held in Staffin for a week every Summer. Young people receive expert tuition in traditional instruments (piping, clàrsach, fiddle, etc.), shinty, arts and song.

What do you want to do?
Fèis Thròndairnis has been running for over 15 years, providing Gaelic arts and music tuition to young people in the North of Skye. For one week every Summer, around 60 young people attend classes every day, Monday to Friday; some from the immediate local area and some who take buses provided by the Fèis from Portree and the North end. In addition, a family Cèilidh is held on the Tuesday evening and a participants' concert on the Friday. Given the rising prices of fuel, accommodation, wages and subsitence, Fèis Thròndairnis is become more expensive to run. However, the committee are reluctant to pass this cost onto local families, who are themselves facing considerable challenges with the cost of living. Because of this Fèis Thròndairnis needs to access additional funding in order to continue to provide high quality Gaelic arts education at an affordable cost.
Why is your project important for your community?
Fèis Thròndairnis enures that the Gaelic language and culture which are so precious to the local community are passed on to future generations. It provides an opportunity for young people to access expert tuition in a range of musical instruments and to speak and hear Gaelic outwith school. Through a family Cèilidh and participant concert, Fèis Thròndairnis brings the whole community together, building connections and celebrating our shared heritage. As an activity which is offered during the school holidays, the Fèis week offers affordable childcare (£90 for the week), supporting local families both economically and socially.

What key milestones have you achieved so far and what will your next steps be?
Participant numbers up 40% on last year.
Now offering almost all classes through Gaelic-medium.
Next steps:
Increase participant numbers, which will allow us to offer more classes.
Work to offer weekly classes as well as an annual Fèis.

Fèis Thròndairnis takes place annually, normally in the third week of July.
