Summary

Transforming an unused garden area into an exciting space for outdoor learning, exploration and discovery.

Estimated Cost

£255

Full Project Details & Description

During the summer holidays, a large tree was removed from the lower area of the garden at Muir of Ord childcare centre (MOO), leaving extensive exposed roots. There is also a substantial tree stump which has been present for many years and limits the use of this space for children's play and learning.

We would like to transform this underused area into a safe, engaging outdoor learning environment where children can explore, create and develop their physical, social and imaginative skills. Our vision is to remove the remaining roots and stump, level the ground, and create a dedicated natural play zone incorporating mud kitchens, digging areas and loose parts play.

The space measures approximately 6.9m x 2.4m and would provide a valuable extension to our outdoor learning provision. Access to high-quality outdoor play supports children's creativity, problem-solving, communication skills and wellbeing, while encouraging connection with nature and sensory exploration.

To complete this project, we require support with the removal of the stump and root system, levelling of the ground, installation of low border fencing and the provision of bark surfacing to create a safe and accessible play area.

This investment would enable us to reclaim an unusable section of the garden and create a stimulating outdoor environment that will benefit current and future children attending MOO Childcare, supporting learning through play and enhancing their daily experiences outdoors. It would also improve the overall safety, accessibility and appearance of the outdoor space, ensuring it remains a valuable community asset for years to come.

MOO Childcare is run by the Highland childcare charity Care and Learning Alliance (CALA)

Estimated material costs are:

  • Border fencing: £83.97
  • Bark surfacing: £267.98
  • Replacement of 3-4 damaged fence posts (84cm above ground level
