Protecting children's right to play by transforming a flood-prone nursery garden into a safe, accessible outdoor space for year-round learning, exploration and wellbeing.

Estimated Cost

£10,647

Full Project Details & Description

At Beechwood Early Learning and Childcare Nursery in Inverness, outdoor play is an essential part of how children learn, develop and make sense of the world around them. However, persistent flooding following rainfall regularly leaves large sections of our garden unusable, limiting children's opportunities to play, explore, take risks, develop physical skills and connect with nature.

We are seeking funding to improve drainage and create a safe, accessible all-weather outdoor learning environment. These improvements will transform a frequently flooded area into a stimulating space where children can enjoy high-quality outdoor experiences throughout the year, regardless of the weather.

Why This Project Matters

The early years are a critical stage in children's development. Through outdoor play, children build confidence, resilience, communication skills, problem-solving abilities and physical coordination. They learn to work together, explore their curiosity, develop creativity and establish a lifelong connection with the natural world.

Currently, flooding significantly restricts access to these opportunities. After periods of rain, areas of the garden become inaccessible due to standing water and safety concerns, reducing the range of experiences available to children and limiting staff's ability to provide consistent outdoor learning.

This project is about much more than improving a physical space. It is about removing barriers to learning and ensuring children have access to an environment that nurtures their development, wellbeing and potential every day.

The project also supports children's rights under Article 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which recognises every child's right to play, leisure and recreation. No child should miss out on valuable outdoor experiences because their play space becomes unusable when it rains.

Impact for Children

By creating a safe, dry and accessible outdoor environment, we will:

  • Enable children to access outdoor play and learning throughout the year.
  • Support physical development through active movement, exploration and challenge.
  • Encourage curiosity, creativity and problem-solving through nature-based play.
  • Improve wellbeing by increasing access to fresh air, outdoor experiences and connection with nature.
  • Create opportunities for children to build confidence, resilience and independence.
  • Strengthen social skills through collaborative play and shared learning experiences.
  • Ensure all children can benefit from an inclusive and accessible outdoor environment.

Most importantly, children will have the freedom to learn through play every day, regardless of the weather.

Measuring Success

We will measure success through:

  • Completion of the drainage and garden improvement works.
  • Increased year-round use of the outdoor environment.
  • Feedback from children, families and staff.
  • Observations of children's engagement, wellbeing and participation in outdoor learning and play.
  • Reduced disruption to outdoor activities caused by flooding.

Conclusion

A child's environment shapes their experiences, learning and development. By transforming a flood-prone garden into a safe, inspiring and accessible outdoor learning space, we will create lasting benefits for children, enabling them to exercise their right to play, build essential life skills and enjoy richer opportunities to learn, explore and thrive.

This investment will not simply improve a garden; it will unlock opportunities for children to learn, grow and flourish through the power of play.
