Summary

CALA seeks funding for a heavy-duty mower and strimmer to maintain outdoor play spaces across 19 Highland childcare settings, supporting safe, active play, learning and wellbeing for children.

Estimated Cost

£2,500

Full Project Details & Description

Highland Charity Care and Learning Alliance (CALA) is seeking funding to purchase a commercial-grade mower and strimmer to maintain and enhance outdoor play environments across our 19 childcare settings throughout the Highlands.

Our outdoor spaces are essential to children's learning, wellbeing, and development. However, maintaining large grounds across rural and Highland locations can be challenging, particularly during the growing season when grass and vegetation can quickly become overgrown. Investing in robust, professional equipment will enable us to keep outdoor environments safe, accessible, and inviting for children year-round.

This investment will benefit hundreds of children and families who access CALA services annually, ensuring outdoor play spaces remain stimulating, inclusive, and ready for learning.

The Need

Outdoor play is a fundamental right and part of childhood and is central to CALA's approach to learning. Many of our settings have extensive gardens and green spaces that support active play, exploration, nature-based learning, risk-taking, and physical development.

Without appropriate equipment, staff spend significant time managing grounds maintenance or rely on costly external contractors. Overgrown grass and vegetation can:

  • Restrict access to play areas
  • Reduce opportunities for outdoor learning
  • Create trip hazards and safety concerns
  • Limit children's exploration and physical activity
  • Affect the appearance and usability of community childcare spaces

A heavy-duty mower and strimmer would enable efficient maintenance of outdoor areas across multiple settings, ensuring children can access high-quality outdoor environments throughout the year.

Benefits for Children

The investment will directly support children's:

Physical Development

  • More opportunities for running, climbing, balancing, and active outdoor play.
  • Safe access to larger outdoor spaces that encourage movement and healthy lifestyles.
  • Development of gross motor skills through varied terrain and natural play experiences.

Learning and Development

  • Enhanced opportunities for nature-based learning, discovery, and environmental awareness.
  • Greater access to outdoor curriculum activities linked to literacy, numeracy, science, and creativity.
  • Richer experiences that support curiosity, imagination, and problem-solving.

Health and Wellbeing

  • Increased time outdoors supports mental wellbeing and emotional resilience.
  • Access to fresh air and physical activity contributes to healthier lifestyles.
  • Outdoor environments provide calming and restorative spaces for children.

Inclusion and Equity

  • Ensures all children, including those in rural communities, have access to safe and attractive outdoor learning environments.
  • Supports equitable learning experiences across all 19 CALA settings.

Wider Community Benefits

This investment will also:

  • Improve the appearance and accessibility of community childcare facilities.
  • Enable staff time to be focused on children rather than grounds maintenance.
  • Reduce long-term maintenance costs.
  • Support CALA's commitment to sustainability by maintaining natural play environments rather than replacing them with hard landscaping.
  • Enhance spaces used for family activities, community events, and outdoor learning programmes.

Outcomes

As a result of this funding:

  • Outdoor play areas across 19 CALA childcare settings will be maintained to a consistently high standard.
  • Hundreds of children annually will benefit from safer and more accessible outdoor environments.
  • Children's opportunities for outdoor learning and physical play will increase.
  • Staff time will be used more effectively, supporting quality childcare delivery.
  • Community-based childcare spaces across the Highlands will remain welcoming and well-maintained.

Budget

Item Estimated Cost Commercial Heavy-Duty Mower £1,000 Professional Strimmer £800 Safety Equipment and PPE £300 Maintenance and Consumables £400 Total £2,500

Conclusion

At CALA, we believe that children learn best when they have regular access to safe, stimulating outdoor environments. Funding for a heavy-duty mower and strimmer would be a practical investment with lasting impact, helping us maintain high-quality outdoor spaces across 19 childcare settings throughout the Highlands.

By supporting this project, funders will enable hundreds of children to enjoy richer outdoor play experiences, better physical and emotional wellbeing, and greater opportunities to learn through nature and exploration. This simple but essential investment will strengthen childcare provision, support families, and help rural communities thrive.
