Extreme Beach Cleaning, Loch Ewe
Proposal code: THC-2026-02-40
Beach cleaning on the more remote beaches and shores in the Loch Ewe area
Estimated Price
8000
1. What do you want to do? (Clearly list the activities you need funding for)
At present We are looking for funding to get a quad to help move collected plastic to a road where it can be picked up, and to put out “containers” to new beaches to hold collected plastic and also empty the containers when they are full. At present there are 9 containers out along the coast in the more remote areas.
• 2. Why is your project important for your community? Please include details of how your project aligns with your Areas Place Plan
This group helps keep the beaches free from plastic bottles, polystyrene from buoys and rope and netting from creels and fishing. Last year a whale went ashore and died on Skye tied in rope from creels.
• 3. What positive impact will your project have? Tell us about the outcomes you expect
Not everyone can walk ( or has time to ) to the more remote areas, some of the containers are nearly a two hour walk from the nearest tarred road, some marine wildlife can swallow plastic floating in the sea, although we can’t remove it from the water once on the shore it can be washed out to sea again, what we pick up can’t go back out to sea.
• 4. What key milestones have you achieved so far and what will your next steps be?
Community Engagement & Support Evidenced │Project Plan/Feasibility/Business Case created │ Necessary Consents Obtained │Quotes Obtained │ Funding applications Submitted │
This group has been beach cleaning since 2018, and over that time has put out 9 containers, there are plans to put out more where plastic is washed ashore. Locals that go walking pick up plastic and rope as do some visiting tourists, one chap in a tent collected a vast amount of stuff at the beach where he was camping.
We are looking for £8000 in funding for a quad, I have had problems with borrowed ones not starting all the time so it needs to be reliable at times being a 1hr + walk over heathery moorland from a road.
We have a web page, youtube page and Facebook page under “extreme beach cleaning loch ewe” it will come up in a search.
• 5. What is your anticipated start date/end date Please type directly into the box instead of copying and pasting from another document.
We started as a group in 2018 and became a charity ( to aid getting funding ) in Sept 2024, beach cleaning is an ongoing thing, there is more flotsam getting washed in with every storm.
