Mallaig Marine Training Centre

To develop a Marine Training Centre alongside UHI providing opportunities for local people to access appropriate skills and knowledge around marine industries.

We want to construct a Marine Training Centre on a vacant site owned by Mallaig Harbour Authority. The Centre would then be leased to UHI NWH to provide Marine Training opportunities locally, building on the existing training provided in Mallaig. The proposal is to use modular buildings, which can be configured to suit the initial requirments, but can also be added to as the Training Centre expands and develops. While UHI NWH have developed a specialism in Marine Training locally over 20 years, the current premises are limited, and without appropriate facilities, and there is no capacity for expansion of these. Like many coastal communities, life in Mallaig revolves around the sea, and while the fishing industry has declined in recent years, the Harbour is now home to an array of maritime activities, all competing for appropriately trained staff. A new Marine Training Centre would support our local young people to remain in the area, providing a skilled workforce for the growing Aquaculture and Marine Tourism Sectors, and reducing population decline locally. We have identified a site for the centre, and spoken to contractors about providing the appropriate modular building solution. We have applied to various sources for capital funding towards the project.
