Communities Housing Trust will continue its fundamental role of supporting communities in Highland to articulate housing needs and to create more affordable rural homes where they are required.

Working in mainly in the less-well-served areas of the Highland Council region, the Communities Housing Trust (CHT) works with communities to develop their housing ambitions, through identifying strong partnerships and it supports the delivery of and develops community-led housing where it is appropriate. The funding requirement is to enable our exisitng experienced team to continue to their work with development trusts, communities and stakeholders to create and deliver a pipeline of new affordable rural homes to help meet the Housing Challenge. 

By working across the Highlands, CHT work with many communities at once. Our expertise is welcomed by groups embarking on their first project, or undertaking a more challenging one. Our team offer support from project inception, feasibility, pre-development, construction and finally letting agency services once the homes are complete. The outputs will include:

- Community engagement & events

- Housing Needs Surveys 

- Land audit appraisals & land purchases

- Funding applications 

- Feasibility studies 

- Pre-development of sites and buildings

- Construction of new affordable homes - through the most appropriate funding route

The impacts will be that:

- More people in Highland have a secure affordable home to live in

- More communites can articulate their housing needs clearly to funders, stakeholder and undertstand the next steps

- More communiites can identify and purchase suitable land and buildings for development into affordable homes, and required facilites like business units, woodland crofts or compatible tourism facilites

- More partnership working opportunites are developed and strengthened

- More feasibility studies are carried out to determine future planning applications

- More funding is secured by communities to achieve their goals

- More homes are built in areas of housing need in rural places

- Social, cultural, environmental and economic activity leads to more resilient communites

 

The project will run from July 2026 onwards.
