Proposal code: THC-2026-04-90

The goal of the project is to increase the petrol tank capacity of the Filling Station in Uig in advance of the doubling of ferry traffic when Calmac launch their new ferry service in 2027.

1. What do you want to do?

Add additional unleaded petrol capacity to the Filling Station in Uig, because demand for fuel will increase significantly when Calmac add a new ferry service from Uig in 2027.  We'll need funding to scope the project and funding to execute the upgrade work.

2. Why is your project important for your community?

The Filling Station in Uig is the only source of fuel in the north end of Skye.  It's a lifeline service for the local community and also essential for visitors to the area and ferry passengers to and from Harris and North Uist.  The current fuel capacity of the Filling Station is only just sufficient to meet current needs and the Filling Station often runs out of fuel.  The addition of an extra ferry from late 2027 will stretch the Filling Station beyond capacity, leaving ferry users and the local community without regular, ready access to fuel.

A key part of the Development Plan for the Uig area is to ensure that the community can benefit from the large number of visitors and travellers in the area.  The ability to provide them with fuel and additional products and services from the Filling Station is a key component of the economic benefit that the community can derive from visitors and travellers.  Increasing fuel capacity at the Filling Station has no negative consequences for the local community.

3. What positive impact will your project have?

The Filling Station is owned by Uig Trust.  It is the Trust's primary asset.  Increasing the fuel capacity of the Filling Station will:-

a. Provide more stable fuel provision for the increased numbers of ferry passengers in the future.

b. Provide a better continuity of fuel provision for the local community.

c. Increase footfall by at least 50% for the shop and cafe at the Filling Station, both of which are owned by the Uig Community Trust.

d. Allow the Filling Station to provide the local community with fuel at a discounted rate by running a local community loyalty scheme at the Filling Station and cafe.

e. Increase the value of the lease for the Filling Station, allowing the Uig Community Trust to generate a higher level of ongoing income in future.

f. Allow the Filling Station to provide at least one more local job through increased turnover and revenue.

4. What key milestones have you achieved so far and what will your next steps be?

We're right at the start of the project.  The lease for the Filling Station will transfer to a new operator in Octover 2026.  The Trust wants to use the interim period to scope and cost the project and secure funding for the upgrade.  We expect the primary source of funds to be HIE and Calmac with funds to be sourced from other parties, as well as some funding from the Trust itself.

5. What is your anticipated start date/end date.

We'd like to start scoping the project by June 2026, with a view to having costings in place by August 2026.  We'd expect upgrading works to happen during the tourist off season from October 2026 to February 2027, but the deadline is to ensure that increased capacity is in place before the new ferry is added to the routes in Uig in Q4 2027.
