1. What do you want to do?
The Uig Community Trust would like to upgrade the energy usage of the Filling Station, shop and cafe at the Uig harbour site, which is owned by Uig Community Trust.
2. Why is your project important to the community?
The Filling Station, shop and cafe in Uig are owned by the Uig Community Trust. The lease for the premises is changing hands at the start of October 2026. Our goal is to improve the energy usage of the existing businesses to make them more energy efficient and also explore options for solar and wind power generation to reduce the energy demands of the property. The shop and cafe are not well used by the community at present. Improved energy efficiency and a reduced need for power from the grid will increase the profitability of both businesses, which will allow the Trust and the new tenants to invest more in providing a higher quality and more consistent service for the local community and for visitors and ferry users.
Upgrading the Filling Station will also help to grow the financial sustainability of the Uig Community Trust.
3. What positive impact will your project we have?
We expect the project to have a range of linked and overlapping benefits. It will:-
a. Reduce the current need for power from the grid through improved energy efficiency, which will reduce the running costs of the businesses in the property.
b. Allow for clean energy to be provided to the Filling Station, shop and cafe, which will also reduce running costs, as above.
c. Allow investment in more energy efficient fittings in the shop and cafe.
d. Allow for investment in a more consistent, improved offering at the cafe, which will benefit locals, visitors and ferry users.
4. What key milestones have you achieved so far and what will your next steps be?
We're right at the start of the journey on the project. The new lease on the Filling Station is about to be awarded and the Trust wants to engage with the new tenants on plans to upgrade the site. The first step will be to engage with Business Energy Scotland on an audit of existing energy usage across all three businesses operating from the Filling Station site in order to establish the scope and potential for improved energy efficiency and also solar and wind power generation on the site and adjoining land.
Thereafter we'll seek funding from the relevant bodies in the area and beyond. At this stage no consents or quotes have been obtained and funding applications have not been submitted.
5. What is your anticipated start date/end date?
We'd like to be working with Business Energy Scotland by June 2026, with a view to having the project scoped before the new tenant takes over the lease in October. Our goal is for quotes to be obtained and funding secured for the work to take place during the tourist off season in Q4 2026 and Q1 2027.
