1. What do you want to do?

The Uig Community Trust would like to acquire the existing slipway in Uig Bay to improve facilities for the recreational sailing community.  This will require:-

a. An asset transfer of the slipway and surrounding land.

b. An upgrade of the slipway itself and the addition of services for the recreational sailing community around the slipway, which will require scoping, quotations for work and applications for funding.

2. Why is your project important for your community?

One key theme in the Uig development plan consultation was the need to upgrade facilities for the recreational sailing community.  Uig Bay is currently something of a gap in provision for recreational sailors aroun the north end of Skye, where there are little or no services between Dunvegan and Staffin.  The Uig Community Trust is in the process of transferring moorings in the harbour from Highland Council to the Trust.  The moorings will start to fill the gap in provision for the sailing community and will provide a modest source of income for the Trust.

However, the moorings are only the necessary first step towards a more comprehensive upgrade of facilities in the Bay.  There is an existing slipway in the bay that is owned by Highland Council, but it is not well used or well maintained.  The slipway will require investment in order to upgrade it for use across different tide times.  The addition of other services for the sailing community will make Uig Bay a more attractive option for sailors to anchor in the bay, which will open up new avenues of revenue for the local community from visiting sailors across the season.

3. What positive impact will your project have?

The slipway is a necessary step towards transforming Uig Bay into a more welcoming destination for recreational sailors.  The Uig Community Trust is transferring moorings from Highland Council, which will allow us to establish a Moorings Association in the local community.  Acquiring and upgrading the slipway will:-

a. Improve facilities for recreational sailors, which will attract more of them to use Uig Bay.

b. Allow other revenue generating services around the slip way to be developed for the sailing community, like showers, lockers, F&B etc.

c. Increase the usage of the slipway by existing, local users of the bay.

d. Increase access to the bay by younger members of the community at the start of their sailing journey.

e. Grow the reputation of Uig as a hub for sports and outdoor pursuits participation.

4. What key milestones have you achieved so far and what will your next steps be?

We're at the start of the process of upgrading facilties around Uig Bay for the recreational sailing community.  Each step will build upon the one before.  The first step is to transfer existing moorings from Highand Council.  This is underway and we expect the transfer to be completed during the 2026 tourist season.  In parallel, the Uig Community Trust is establishing a Moorings Association, in which the Trust will be an active participant.  Once the Moorings Association is establised, the next step will be to acquire the slipway and scope the necessary upgrade of the skipway and services to be added around it.  We expect that the acquisition process will be completed in 2027.

5. What is your anticipated start date/end date.

The larger project has already started, becuase we're in the process of transferring moorings from Highland Council.  We anticipate that the asset transfer of the slipway will happen in early 2027 with scoping work happening later in the year.  Funding for scoping and upgrade works will be sought in mid to late 2027.
