Lochcarron Primary School MUGA

A new MUGA at Lochcarron Primary School and Nursery will benefit not only the attending children but also the wider community and visitors who will be able to take part in sports all year round.

Lochcarron Primary and Nursery School currently serves children aged 2 to 12 from across the area, with a current roll of approximately 54. The West Coast climate means that the existing grass pitch is unusable for much of the school year. The school also has no games hall so pupils often have to use the dining room or the tarmac playground for PE, which is not ideal and limits the activities they can safely take part in.

Tick bites on the grass pitch are also an ongoing concern. Several children have needed antibiotics after tick bites, and there are individuals in our community living with the long-term effects of Lyme disease. We believe that replacing the grass with an all-weather surface would significantly reduce this risk and provide a safer and more reliable space for the children to use.

However, a new pitch would not only benefit the school. We are in discussion with local groups, including the shinty club, and we expect the facility to be available for community use in the evenings, at weekends and during school holidays. The children of Lochcarron already take part in badminton, shinty, basketball and cross-country, with pupils reaching national competitions and a former pupil recently recognised as Women’s Camanachd Under-14 Player of the Year. Better facilities would help them all continue to thrive.
